A 21-year-old Manhattan resident and student at SUNY Canton was recently arrested on marijuanacharges after authorities obtained a warrant to search his dorm room on campus.

His arrest followed an investigation into drug sales in the area and involved the use of confidential informants who allegedly made marijuana buys from him. When police arrived on campus to arrest him, they allegedly detected the odor of marijuana at his door and sought a search warrant from one of the town justices of Pierrepont. Police then raided the dorm room and seized digital scales, less than an ounce of marijuana and $13,000 cash while making the 11:30 a.m. arrest.

Agencies participating in the sting were Drug Task Force partners St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office, and the Canton Police, SUNY Potsdam Police, SUNY Canton Police and Pottsdam Police Departments.

The student faces felony charges of criminal sales of marijuana in the third degree, as well as criminal possession of marijuana in the fifth degree and one violation of unlawful possession of marijuana.

Arraignment was in the town court by a local justice. He was jailed, and bail was set at $10,000 bond or $5,000 cash. The student's next court appearance is November 20.

Getting arrested on drug charges can be intimidating and life-changing. Colleges and universities may suspend or expel students, and employees can be terminated even before a conviction is obtained. Parents of minor children may face having their children removed from their home and placed with other relatives or even in state custody. A strong advocate in the form of an experienced defense attorney can advise you on how to navigate the criminal justice system. If the case advances to trial, an attorney will fight for your rights and present a vigorous defense on your behalf.
