Traffic Violations

There are many potential offenses to commit as a driver, especially as so many people are often rushing to get to work or run errands. Failing to pull over for an emergency vehicle, failing to yield, reckless driving and following too closely can all be problematic. However, one of the most potentially dangerous traffic violations can take place when children getting onto or off of a school bus are involved.

According to the state website, Safe NY, a school bus violation occurs when the driver of another vehicle improperly passes the bus when the red lights on the bus are flashing. In New York, a group of government-run organizations are at the helm of a cooperative project to promote safety to vehicles when driving alongside school buses.

Punishments for offenders of state law concerning school bus violations will vary depending on how many times an individual has been convicted of the same offense previously, ranging from $250 to $1,000 in fines and up to between 30 and 180 days in jail.

The law in New York emphasizes that the drivers of other vehicles must stop along with school buses even when they are travelling in a different direction and whether they are on a highway or multiple lane roads, in a parking lot or on school property. School buses stop frequently and begin slowing down 300 feet before their destination with their yellow lights flashing. They are also legally required to stop at railroads.

Knowing the laws can help people avoid getting a ticket, but everyone makes mistakes while driving. Rather than assume there is nothing that can be done about it, people who have been charged with any traffic related offenses, including a school bus violation, should remember that they have the right to consult a legal professional.
