The Point & Insurance Reduction Program, also known as the Defensive Driving Course or Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Course, is a program offered by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. Private companies are authorized by DMV to provide the course as long as the classes meet the the DMV's strict standards.  Students must complete 320 minutes of instruction and will learn about New York traffic laws, safe driving behaviors and defensive driving techniques. According to the DMV, completion of one of these courses can reduce up to four points from an individual's driving record, as well as qualify drivers for a ten percent reduction in auto insurance premiums for up to three years.

These courses cannot, however, be used to reduce future points. They can only be used to reduce points that already exist on your driving record. They also cannot eliminate an obligation to pay a driver responsibility fee. This is a fee that is assessed by DMV for drivers who accumulate six or more points within an 18-month period. Defensive driving courses also cannot prevent a suspension or revocation that is mandatory under the law.

Defensive driving courses can also help taxi and limousine drivers get points reduced from their licenses. According to the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, drivers holding a TLC license can reduce points that are accumulated within 15 months prior to completion of the course.

While in the past, defensive driving courses had to be attended in person, today many online options exist making these classes a convenient way to get points reduced from an individual's driving record.
