Auto-Brewery Syndrome is a rare condition that most people have never heard of. If you suffer from it, when your body’s digestive system is overloaded with excess yeast, carbohydrates are then converted to alcohol. This could then make you appear very drunk even if you have not ingested a lot of alcohol.

According to U.S. News & World Report, Auto-Brewery Syndrome was responsible for a New York woman’s arrest for drunk driving and was also the reason for the charges later being dismissed. The woman was reported to 911 for driving erratically and when she was pulled over, the officer observed that she displayed many of the usual signs of being intoxicated. Breathalzyer results indicated that her blood alcohol content was .33 percent, well over the legal limit.

The condition is so rare, that 95 percent of people who have it are not even aware and less than 100 people have been officially diagnosed as having it. If you have ever been on antibiotics for an extended period of time, you may be more susceptible to developing Auto-Brewery Syndrome. However, if you are one of those people flare-ups can occur by eating a lot of carbohydrates. Imagine how strange it would be to be accused of drinking excessively when you only ate a large pasta dinner. Changes in diet and treatment with anti-fungal medications seem to have positive results in combating the disease.

After spending thousands of dollars on medical testing, the woman was able to convince the court that she suffers from this condition and her charges were dismissed. However, it remains to be seen whether an appeal by the prosecutor will be successful or not.
