Traffic Violations

In the wake of the new mayor’s plan to crack down on dangerous drivers, it’s no surprise that traffic tickets are up in New York City.

For example, last month there were 7,702 speeding tickets issued to drivers in New York City, which was a 19 percent increase from February of last year.

Tickets for other moving violations such as using a cellphone while driving and improper signaling saw an increase, as well. In fact, some areas of the city saw a 10-fold increase in traffic tickets compared to 2013.

In his plan called “Vision Zero,” Mayor Bill de Blasio directs the NYPD to “[increase] enforcement against dangerous moving violations, including speeding, failing to yield to pedestrians, signal violations, improper turns/disobeying signage, and phoning/texting while driving,” Gothamist reports.

Getting a traffic ticket is never fun. But few New York drivers take the charges as seriously as they should. While many people chose to just plead guilty to the charges by paying the ticket, it’s wise to consult with an experienced attorney first.

That’s because you may be able to get out of your ticket or plead down a charge. Even some minor traffic citations can result in points being added to your driving record. After 11 or more points are added during an 18-month period, you could lose your driver’s license for a period of time.

Now that New York officials appear to be cracking down on traffic offenses, it’s more important than over to know your rights so that you don’t put your driver’s license at risk.
