Traffic Violations

There are a few activities in life in which the higher you score, the more you lose. One of them is golf. The other is the New York State Driver Violation Point System in which you can also score "points" that are anything but measures of victory.

In many ways, traffic violations in this state constitute a form of double punishment. If you are convicted, you will face the standard penalties of a fine, and possibly a suspension or even revocation of your driver's license. Points on your license add an extra layer to the punishment already meted out by the traffic court.

What makes points even more onerous is their lasting effect. Even after you have paid your fine, served your time and gone through the process to get your license back, for a year and a half after conviction the points remain.

The Driver Violation Point System is not going away. If you live in New York, it is something that comes with the territory. The only way to fight it is to either avoid getting pulled over, virtually any traffic violation will earn you points, including driving one mile per hour over the speed limit, or to contest the charges brought against you in traffic court.

Driving perfection is not attainable for many New York motorists, so avoidance may not always work. This means that if you are charged with a traffic violation or another crime related to driving, such as DWI, you should carefully consider contesting the matter in court.

Part of that careful consideration involves the law firm that you choose to represent you. Not all are the same: you will want an attorney whose practice includes an emphasis on representing drivers in traffic court. At the Law Offices of Zev Goldstein, we are traffic ticket attorneys. Go to our website, and those three words are the first that you will see. For us, defending drivers against minor and serious accusations of vehicle-related crimes is not a sidebar activity to something else.
