Traffic Violations

If you received a traffic citation from the New York Traffic Violations Bureau in Rochester or New York City, you can use the state's ePlead system to enter a plea. Many New York drivers may think that the online system is for guilty pleas and payments only; however, you can also use the ePlead system to enter a plea of not guilty and schedule a date for your hearing.

The ePlead system was put into place in 2006 and can be used for a number of online transactions. In addition to entering your initial plea information, you can also use the system to change a previously entered plea from guilty to not guilty, and you can use it to reschedule your hearing date one time.

According to the New York Department of Motor Vehicles, there were almost 567,000 transactions done in person and over the phone in 2014 that could have been taken care of online, including 317,160 not guilty pleas. It is no longer necessary for you to take time out of your busy life or take time off of work to deal with traffic tickets, even if you want to enter a plea of not guilty.

If you are an out of state driver who received a ticket in Rochester or New York City, you can also take advantage of the online system. A question at the beginning of the online process will separate New York drivers from out of state drivers, making it easier for you to enter your plea of not guilty.
